Map od Dunnet head The most northerly point on the mainland of the United Kingdom - this old red sandstone headland resembles a mountain in its climate and vegetation although only 120metres above sea level.

From the viewpoint there are stunning views to the Orkney Islands and as far west as the Sutherland mountains of Ben Loyal and Ben Hope.

Tundra-like vegetation can be seen on the peat headland with shrubs such as bearberry and juniper and spring squill, thrift and crowberry form a strip of maritime heath along the cliff edge.

The cliff reaches up to 90 metres and large numbers of seabirds - guillemot, razorbill, puffin and kittiwake - breed here between May and July, but viewing them must be done with care as the cliffs are unfenced and are eroding constantly. Above the moors in summer there is a trill of skylark and the emotive call of golden plover. Both arctic and great skua can be seen here.

It is possible to walk from Dwarwick harbour on the west side up to the lighthouse (built 1830) but the walking can be rough underfoot and boots are strongly advised as well as warm and waterproof clothing. Do not attempt this walk when there is a haar.
