Sticking out into the North Sea and the Pentland Firth, Caithness is in an ideal location to be the first point of landfall on the British Mainland for migrant passerines in autumn. Birds passing through the northern isles passing along an east coast flyway, fly directly towards the Caithness coast.

Although the northern isles are more familiar with active birders, there remains a huge potential to find a rare Scandinavian or north American migrant on a headland in Caithness.

The best time of year is September through to November. Along the east coast, Ness Head and Duncansby Head have a good potential to harbour something special. The optimal conditions are misty days with poor visibility and an east wind.
